What is Restorative Dental Care?

Any procedure that aims to restore the normal function and appearance of your smile is covered under restorative dental care.

By repairing structural problems such as missing or damaged teeth or infected areas, our dentists at Kennedy East Dental can help restore your smile – and your oral health.

Depending on your issue, our dentists will determine the appropriate restorative treatment option for you.

Periodontal (Gum) Therapy

Gum disease can infect the tissues of the mouth, including the alveolar bone, cementum, gingiva, gums and periodontal ligament. If the disease is identified in its early stages, preventive therapy will be recommended. Otherwise, treatment methods will depend on the type and severity of disease.

Root Canals

During a root canal, your dentist removes diseased nerves, tissues and blood vessels from a tooth's interior. By eliminating decay and bacteria, your dentist can help stop the spread of infection and prevent the need for a tooth extraction in the future. Without treatment, tissue surrounding the tooth can become infected.

Dental Crowns & Bridges

Crowns

Crowns help to restore a tooth's function and appearance. These porcelain caps are placed on top of teeth and are typically used to cover dental implants, attach bridges, or prevent a cracked tooth from deteriorating. They can also help to restore a stained or discoloured tooth to its natural appearance.

Bridges

Bridges are custom-made, natural-looking tooth replacements intended to replace a section of missing teeth. They are bonded to existing teeth or dental implants and can restore the natural contour of teeth in addition to the bite between the upper and lower teeth. Bonus: they are barely noticeable.

Dental Fillings

Composite (tooth-coloured) fillings are used to repair a cavity or tooth damage such as a crack. These fillings can endure moderate pressure from the continual stress of chewing. They can be used on front and back teeth and are an ideal choice for those who prefer their fillings to appear more natural-looking.

Composite fillings have grown in popularity since their arrival and are now used more often than gold or amalgam fillings, likely because they blend so well with natural teeth.

The procedure of placing a filling is a relatively simple one. First, the dentist isolates the tooth from saliva to ensure it stays dry before removing the infected portion of the tooth.

The composite resin is placed over the opening, then a special light hardens each layer of composite resin material. The composite resin is then sculpted to resemble a real tooth.

Inlays & Onlays

Inlays and onlays are used to repair cavities when a tooth is damaged too extensively for a standard filling. These tooth-coloured porcelain fillings are custom-made in a dental laboratory, then permanently cemented to the tooth as a single piece.

Full & Partial Dentures

At Kennedy East Dental, our dentists offer dentures to replace one missing tooth, several in a row (partial dentures), or an entire jaw of missing teeth (full dentures). Dentures allow patients with missing teeth to maintain facial structure, and to speak and eat properly.
