What is a Root Canal?

Diseased blood vessels, nerves and other tissues need to be removed from the inside of a damaged tooth. Your dentist may need to complete a root canal to save damaged teeth and avoid an extraction.

To begin, your dentist will remove diseased tissue from your tooth, then clean and disinfect the inner chamber. This chamber is then filled with medicated material to help prevent infection. To finish the procedure, a dental restoration such as a crown will be used to cap the tooth.

Benefits of a Root Canal

A root canal is performed to help relieve painful symptoms, swelling or tooth sensitivity. This process works to save the natural tooth and limit the need for more extensive dental procedures in the future.

By eliminating decay and bacteria from the inner tooth, your dentist can help stop the spread of infection and restore the healthy portion of the tooth - often preventing the need for an extraction.

Most patients who undergo root canal therapy experience little discomfort or pain. With proper care, most teeth that have been treated with a root canal can last a lifetime.
