What is Dental Sedation?
At Kennedy East Dental we do everything we can to help patients feel relaxed and comfortable during their dental procedures, including offering a variety of dental sedation options.
Our dentists can help determine whether a dental sedation option is right for you. In addition to offering these, we will make every effort to work at your pace, take breaks when you need them, and provide calm reassurance as needed.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
When inhaled through the mouth and nose, nitrous oxide calms patients even though they remain awake and able to communicate. It also tends to lessen anxiety, increase pain threshold, reduce gag reflex and make time pass more quickly.
Oral Sedation
Your dentist may prescribe oral sedatives in pill or liquid form. The medication is taken orally in advance of a dental appointment. Though it leaves you awake for the procedure, it produces a calming effect to significantly relax you.
IV Sedation
IV sedation is the deepest level available without general anesthesia. These sedatives are administered directly into the bloodstream. You will be attached to a monitor so that the dentist can keep track of vital signs during the procedure.
General Anesthesia
In this controlled state of unconsciousness, awareness, movement and discomfort are eliminated during dental treatment. Under general anesthesia, your dentist can complete complex procedures while you are asleep in one appointment.
